He and Katerina (Katie) SVOBODA were separated on 28 Mar 1898 at Valley Co., Nebraska. He died on 18 Mar 1943 at Route 5, South Omaha, Sarpy Co., Nebraska, at age 94. He was buried on 20 Mar 1943 at Bohemian National Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska, at Lot 8, Grave 9, Section 20 in an unmarked grave beside Frank and Rosy SEBELA. He was the son of John & Anna (SPRAEL) THUMA. His marriage license recorded his place of birth as Germany. The 1900 census gave Germany as his birthplace. The 1910 census recorded Bohemia (Austria) as place of birth. His place of birth was listed as Bavaria on the 1920 census. He came to America in 1871. (He is very likely on the ship passenger list as Johan THUMA, age 24, male, occupation Tischler [a type of carpenter], nationality Neigedeind [an area in Austria], last permanent residence Wien [Vienna], destination Michigan, ship "Laura and Gertrude," arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, on 31 July 1871.). Douglas Co., NE, Marriage Book 5, p. 405. From the _Fremont [NE] Weekly Herald_, 13 March 1879: "Some thief went into John THUMA's barn last night and carried off his tool chest. THUMA went before Justice LOOMIS this morning [6 March 1879] and procured a search warrant against the suspected party." He was naturalized on 8 Apr 1880 at Dodge Co., Nebraska, renouncing allegiance to the Emperor of Austria. He and Katerina (Katie) SVOBODA appeared on the census of 22 Jun 1880 at Maple Creek Precinct, Colfax Co., NE, p. 201B, #16; listed as "THUMA." On 3 August 1893 he purchased 219 acres in Elyria Township in the SW 1/4 Section 14 and Lots 3 and 4 of Section 23, Township 20, Range 15, in Valley County, Nebraska, for $4,500, according to Valley Co. Warranty Deed Book 15, p. 618. This land was transferred to his wife Katie on 28 March 1898, according to Warranty Deed Book 9, p. 205. In 1895 his furniture and undertaking business in Dodge, Nebraska, was destroyed by a fire which burned most of the town. He and Katerina (Katie) SVOBODA lived after 3 Nov 1895 at Ord, Nebraska. He was a cabinet maker in 1900. On 23 July 1910 he and Kate TUMA purchased 160 acres in the SW 1/4 of Section 29, Township 22, Range 15, according to Garfield Co., Nebraska, Warranty Deed Book 11, p. 468, filed 14 September 1910. John gave this land to Kate TUMA on 12 Sep 1910, according to Garfield Co. Warranty Deed Book 11, p. 470, filed 14 Sep 1910. He and Katerina (Katie) SVOBODA appeared on the census of 28 Jan 1920 at Burwell, Garfield Co., NE, ED 127, Sh 13A; in same house as in 1910. According to land records of Garfield Co., NE, he was still living in 1935 in Douglas Co., NE. He was a carpenter. He had a terrible temper according to Jo (MISHKA) MERWIN who was raised by her grandmother, Katie TUMA. He often would go live for awhile in Omaha, Nebraska, with friends. He could speak 7 languages. Frank L. Kolouch of Omaha [no longer in business] was the funeral director. His death notice appeared among the classified ads of the _Omaha [NE] World Herald_ on Sunday, 21 March 1943. Katerina (Katie) SVOBODA was born on 7 Nov 1852 at House #23, village of Kninice (Kynice), parish of Budec (Butsch), district of Dacice (Datschitz), Moravia (Czech Republic). She died on 6 Feb 1925 at Burwell, Garfield Co., Nebraska, at age 72. She was buried on 8 Feb 1925 at Cottonwood Cemetery (Block 10 - Lot 4 - Grave 4), Burwell, Garfield Co., Nebraska. Her birth was recorded in the Roman Catholic parish of Budec for 1828-1858, Kninice [Kynice], p. 78. Her marriage license recorded her place of birth as Austria. She was also known as Katerina SVOBODOVA. Her birth and baptismal certificate, which she carried with her to America, was dated 6 February 1872. She immigrated on 21 May 1872 to Baltimore, Maryland, with her parents. Her first child, Anna, was a product of incest by her father. Her married name was Katie (SVOBODA) TUMA. She was also known as Kejdi TUMA. In the diary of her son-in-law Wenceslaus H. HERMAN was written, "Mamma Tuma moved away to Ord NE, Nov 3, 1895." She appeared on the census of 4-5 June 1900 at Elyria Twp., Valley Co., NE, ED 148, Sh 2, #36; living with her son Joe. Census records indicate that she had given birth to 6 children with 5 still living in 1900 and 1910. On 29 August 1908 she purchased Lot 7 Block 1 in the Harrison Addition (now on the northeast corner of G & 15th Streets) in Burwell, Garfield Co., Nebraska, from her son Joseph TUMA and wife Anna of Valley Co., Nebraska, for $800 according to Garfield Co. (Wencel or Will) HERMAN, son of Vaclav Wenceslaus (Wensel) HERMAN and Anezka (Anna) KUBISTA, on 24 Oct 1893 at Neligh House, West Point, Cuming Co., Nebraska. She died on 1 Mar 1897 at 12 miles northwest of Clarkson, Colfax Co., Nebraska, at age 21. She was buried on 4 Mar 1897 at Czech National Cemetery in Adams Twp., Clarkson, Colfax Co., Nebraska. The Bible of her sister, Emma (TUMA) MISHKA, and the diary of her husband, W. H. HERMAN, recorded her birthdate as 17 March 1874, but that was before her parents married and is thought to be incorrect. Her gravestone has 1875, which is consistent with her marriage license. She died from tuberculosis. An announcement of her death appeared in _The Dodge [NE] Criterion_, 5 March 1897: "Mrs. A.R. HASSON received the sad news Tuesday of the death Monday at 6 o'clock p.m. of her brother's wife, Mrs. W.H. HERMAN, at her home twelve miles northwest of Clarkson. Mrs. HERMAN was Miss Julia TUMA before her marriage and Tuesday evening two of her sisters and a brother went up on the passenger to be present at her funeral, which took place yesterday. Mrs. HASSON went up yesterday morning as did a number of Woodmen, Mr. HERMAN being a member of that lodge at this place. The funeral services were held at the Woodmen Hall in Clarkson at 12 o'clock. Rev. E. CRESSMAN of Dodge officiated. The deceased leaves two children, a babe six months and a child three years, besides the husband, brothers and sisters, parents and many acquaintances who mourn her early demise." In 1899 W. H. 3. William John2 TUMA (John1) was born on 18 Sep 1876 at Fremont, Dodge Co., Nebraska. He married Inez (Birdie) PARKHURST, daughter of Benjamin Franklin (Frank) PARKHURST and Eliza Jane FISHER, on 17 Apr 1900 at York, York Co., Nebraska. He and Inez (Birdie) PARKHURST were separated before 1933. He married Mellie Lee Ann HUNT, daughter of Eli Hamilton HUNT and Samantha Catherine Caroline Caldona Belle (Dona) HAWKINS, on 5 Dec 1933 at Harrison, AR. He died on 19 Oct 1959 at Harrison, Boone Co., Arkansas, at age 83. He was buried in Oct 1959 at Grubb Springs Cemetery, Boone Co., Arkansas. His birthdate was incorrectly reported as 1885 on his death certificate. He

Nebraska, p. 201B, #16. On 24 September 1895 "John TUMA, Jr., returned to school
in Fremont," Nebraska, according to the 27 September issue of _The Dodge [NE]
Criterion_. His name appeared in the Fremont (Nebraska) City Directory in
1896-97, listed as a student at the Normal School[teachers' college]. _The Dodge
[NE] Criterion_ reported on 23 April 1897, "Will TUMA went to Fremont Wednesday
[21 April] to attend the Normal School there. His sister will also attend after
the first of next month." Records of Fremont College (now Midlands Lutheran
College) show that Will "TUME" was a student in the 1890's. York Co., NE,
Marriage Book E, p. 686 (included his parents' names). He was frequently
mentioned in _The Ord [Nebraska] Weekly Journal_ newspaper in 1900. He and Inez (Birdie) PARKHURST appeared on the census of 5 Jun 1900 at
Central Ave. (now 15th St.), Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska, p. 170B, #85. He was
enrolled in the Teacher's Institute held at Ord, Nebraska, in June 1900.
(Teacher's Institutes were held in various communities in Nebraska, usually in
early summer, for the purpose of training individuals who wished to teach in
small rural schools.). He was a school teacher (according to the 1900 census) in
1900. On 20 Sep 1900 _The Ord [NE] Journal_ reported that he and wife "left [17
September] Monday morning for Chelan, Washington, at which place he has secured
a school for the winter. Mr. TUMA has a brother-in-law residing there and if he
likes the country will probably remain a while." _The Ord [NE] Journal_ of 23
August 1900 reported that his teaching job in Washington state would pay $45 per

contact he had with his mother in Nebraska was a letter from Colorado, signed
"W. J. TUMA," dated 2 November 1904, at which time he wrote that she should
expect another letter, along with a photo of her granddaughter Elsie, in about
two weeks. His relatives in Nebraska had (unconfirmed) reports that he had been
killed by a fall while he was repairing the roof of his residence in Colorado
Springs in 1904 or 1905. It was apparently believed by his sister and mother
that his wife and child(ren) were returning to Nebraska, but in spite of
searching for them, they still had located no trace of them by 1925. He and Inez (Birdie) PARKHURST lived between 1906 and 1907 at 323
Adelaide Place, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 385025N1044947W, according to the
city directory of 1906-1907, which listed his occupation as contractor. The
Colorado Springs [CO] City Directory of 1907-1908 reported that Wm. J. TUMA had
moved to Denver. After 1907, he was also known as William John COLEMAN. The earliest known reference to the COLEMAN surname was found in an ad that began appearing weekly in the _Geneva [Nebraska] Gazette_ on 6 February 1908: "Wm. J. COLEMAN - Contractor and Builder - Am prepared to do all kinds of work in the line. - Plans and Estimates cheerfully - Furnished on Application - Geneva, Nebraska."

She belonged to Silver Lake Rebekah Lodge 14 in Geneva, Neb., for more than 56 [or 50?] years and was a past noble grand of that organization. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Velma D. BOYES of La Verne and Mrs. Elsie L. FRYKHOLM of Washington, and a son, George E. COLEMAN of Norco. There also are nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Todd Memorial North Chapel at 3 p.m. Thursday. Gordon A. McGRANE, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. (Bill) BARRETT on 26 Oct 1925 at Florence, Pinal Co., Arizona. She died on 6 Nov 1964 at 1115 N. 13th Place, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona, at age 83. She was buried on 9 Nov 1964 at Greenwood Memorial Park, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona. Her sister Emma's Bible recorded her birthdate as 8 May 1881. Her married name was Katie (TUMA) POWERS. She and her first husband lived in Montana for awhile. She provided nursing care and housekeeping during the last 16 weeks of her mother's life. She lived on 27 Jul 1925 at R.F.D. She bought and sold many houses around Phoenix, living maybe 4-5 years in each one, usually upgrading, or if not upgrading, made a bargain in the deal. In about 1939 or 1940 she bought a two-story house in Phoenix, only 5 or 6 blocks from the Arizona capitol building. She rented out an upstairs room and included board. In the 1930's she had a few acres near Phoenix out in the country. When we would go see her it was always interesting. She made beer and had rabbits and sold them both for a living. During probation she kept the local law enforcement supplied with booze so they left her alone with her enterprises. We always suspected she had several of her homes burnt to the ground to collect the insurance, although the insurance companies never brought charges against her. I remember when I was 17, in 1947, I was over at Aunt Kate's place, about a block from our house, and I was helping her bust up concrete with a sledge hammer. I was swinging away and she said, 'Rees you sissy, give me that hammer.' She could swing that hammer as well as any man could. Aunt Kate was a good-sized woman, about 5 foot 10 inches, and wouldn't let anyone take advantage of her or anyone in her family. I remember when my wife Leta had the flu, Aunt Kate brought a shot glass full of whiskey (a block from her house) and told her to drink it, 'it will make you better,' and it did. What a character she was. Everyone that knew her would never forget her." Marion Wallace POWERS was born at La Ser, Wisconsin. He married Lottie GRANT before 1937. He had a business in Montana.
