This mosaic made of thousands of small marble cubes covered the floor of the exedra (sitting room) in the House of the Faun in Pompeii. A copy of a famous 4th century Greek painting, the mosaic depicts the Battle of Issus in which Alexander the Great defeated Darius III, King of Persia, in 333 B.C.

This large marble statue of Atlas is a Roman copy (of a Greek original) from the second half of the 2nd century A.D. Isn't it interesting that the globe is spherical, long before the days of Christopher Columbus?
