Here is an aerial view of Pompeii between the Forum in the upper left and the theaters in the lower right. Adjacent to the large theater to the left in the trees is the Triangular Forum. When Pompeii was under Etruscan rule a large Doric temple was built in the center of the Triangular Forum. The temple, dedicated to Hercules and Minerva, was in ruins and considered ancient to the first century Pompeians.
The large, square, grassy area behind the stage of the large theater was originally a portico where the audience could stroll and chat during theatrical intermissions. In Nero's time it was converted into a barracks and training center for gladiators. |
