This photo was not taken in Pompeii. The public latrine (or restroom, if you prefer) off the forum of Pompeii is too badly damaged to illustrate how it appeared in ancient times. This photo from the archeological site of Ostia Antica, near Rome, is substituted here for another example depicting common life in those days.
When sufficient water was flowing into the city via the Roman aqueduct system, water flowed continously beneath the seats. |
