We should all be disappointed with the gentleman who wrote the recent letter titled “Let Parents Pay School Taxes.”
I have not called a fire truck to my house, nor ever plan to, so why would I want to pay taxes for that service? While we are tolerant of paying taxes to support the fire department, do we not think it appropriate to invest in the education of future firefighters?
It is inconceivable that only the parents of the children of our community should pay for education. It is in the best interest of all citizens to continue paying taxes to educate all children. I recognize that benefit during my daily encounters with Fort Smith natives who have received an excellent education in our local schools. Though I no longer have children of school age, I want our public schools to continue training the kids who will one day be my banker, my lawyer, my doctor, my mechanic, my cashier, our elected representatives, our soldiers, et cetera.
