Whereas, | the public education system is the foundation of our democratic society and must be strengthened by involvement and support of educators, parents, students and the general public; and |
Whereas, | providing quality teachers in every public school classroom is a means of ensuring higher student achievement and is a priority in education reform; and |
Whereas, | the need for smaller classrooms necessitates the need for additional qualified teachers; and |
Whereas, | the beginning salaries of first year teachers are far below the beginning salaries of other college graduates; and |
Whereas, | the supply of qualified teachers is dangerously low in high growth areas, rural areas, and urban areas; and |
Whereas, | the future supply of qualified teachers will be adversely affected by fewer education majors in Arkansas colleges and universities, record numbers of retiring teachers, and the continuing high attrition rate in the teaching profession; now therefore be it |
Resolved, | that Arkansas PTA and local PTAs/PTSAs increase its commitment to the teaching profession; and be it further |
Resolved, | that Arkansas PTA and local PTAs/PTSAs continue to support efforts to upgrade the quality and quantity of public school teachers; and be it further |
Resolved, | that Arkansas PTA and local PTAs/PTSAs encourage appropriate state authorities to establish salaries commensurate with the professional preparation and dedication necessary for effective teaching that will entice a quality workforce into the teaching profession and that will retain good, quality teachers necessary for higher student achievement. |
