Tower of Mercury

Once an important defensive post, the Tower of Mercury is built into the northwestern wall of the city. It probably served no purpose during the Pax Romana. It's likely that the top of this tower was visible above the ashes following the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius, which is seen in the background.
