Similar to the town square in small town America, the Forum of Pompeii was the heart of social, commercial, and political activity. Here we can see what is left of the travertine marble which once paved the approximately 100 by 450 foot area of the Forum. Most of the stone was "recycled" for the construction of buildings in Naples back before anyone considered any other use for ruined cities. Originally, the pedestals supported bronze or marble statues, most of which were removed from the Forum in the century following Pompeii's destruction. |
