Pompeii Street

A typical street in Pompeii had two-story houses with balconies. Some homeowners would have shops in the front on the ground level. Water was often flowing in the streets from overflowing public fountains. Waste water was commonly thrown out into the streets. To keep one's feet clean and dry, it was necessary to cross where stepping stones were placed.
