Naples Panorama

On a rare day, after a period of rain and wind, the smog will clear so that Mount Vesuvius can be seen from Naples. (I don't know why millions of people risk living so close to a potentially destructive volcano.) The cloud seen over Vesuvius during its first eyewitnessed eruption was described as similar to an umbrella pine (seen in this photo), rising with a thick straight trunk to a great height, then dispersing outward.
