Dear Dr. Ganus,

We are a bit disappointed that you will not be able to visit in our home while you are in Campania (the region of Naples), but we understand.

Please call us after you get settled in your hotel in Sorrento. Our number is 509-1747. (From outside Campania the number is 081-509-1747. From the U.S. the number is 011-39-81-509-1747.)

Our favorite shop in Sorrento is the inlaid wood factory "Notturno." See Mr. Michele Pellecchia, sales manager, and tell him Dr. Cole from NATO sent you. He will give you a nice discount.

As I said, I will be glad to give you a guided tour of Pompeii on Wednesday, 16 April. The ruins open at 9 A.M. It is about a half-hour from Sorrento. If you already have a guide, I would like to "tag along" and add to your enjoyment and understanding. I have been to Pompeii many times, including once with a local archeology professor. Several things in Pompeii shed light on New Testament history. The tour will take a minimum of two hours, but three hours is probably best.

I am sure everyone in your group will enjoy the time spent in the Naples area. I hope jet lag is kind to everyone. It is unfortunate that the dollar is losing value so quickly in Europe right now. The weather in April is generally very nice. Probably long sleeves during the day and a sweater at night will be sufficient. It is not uncommon for the Spring days to be plagued by rain (but no worse than I remember at Harding).

We hope your flight to Italy is uneventful. Please let me hear from you. This is especially important after you arrive in Sorrento, because the Navy can be a bit unpredictable. Also, we will need to work out where and what time to meet in Pompeii.

Very sincerely,

Michael S. Cole, M.D.
